A duo comprising the slightly surreal French cabaret artist Anne Pigalle and musician and songwriter Nick Plytas, Who Likes Jazz? was the only record ever released by Via Vagabond. “I had nothing to do with the music,” Anne Pigalle says now. “I was a kind of a creative consultant – I came up with the name, advised on the cover et cetera. It was supposed to be like a modern bohemia thing…”
But the Pigalle/Plytas collaboration carried on soon after, when Anne signed to the fledgling ZTT Records, and began work on her debut album. Everything Could Be So Perfect and its singles, He Stranger and Why Does It Have To Be This Way? were all co-written with Plytas and set the tone for a career which has since taken in feature films, adverts, club nights and paintings.
Nick Plytas’ later work has since been more obscure, steering away from the limelight in favour of keyboard sessions for everyone from Tina Turner to Neneh Cherry, his only solo calling card remaining this mid-80s synth and sampler workout for Stiff.
